INFORMATION ABOUT THE
INTRAUTERINE DEVICE (IUD)
Information Resource

The IUD is a small device that is inserted into the uterus (womb) to prevent pregnancy.

There are various shapes and sizes of IUD's. Your physician will determine which is most suitable for you.

How the IUD works is not completely understood. It is believed that the IUD seems to interfere in some way with the implantation of a fertilized egg in the lining of the uterus. The IUD does not prevent ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary).

Before inserting an IUD, your doctor will perform a pelvic examination to determine the size and position of the uterus. The physician will also make sure you have a healthy cervix and vagina.

The actual insertion of the IUD usually takes only a few minutes. You could experience momentary cramping. ... or nothing at all.

Your doctor may wish to insert the IUD while you are having a menstrual period to avoid the possibility of disturbing a pregnancy. Insertion of the IUD at this time is frequently easier due to some enlargement of the cervical opening.

Once inserted, the IUD remains in place until the woman wishes to become pregnant, or for some other reason, desires its removal.

After insertion, you will be instructed to insert your finger into the

vagina to feel for the IUD string. You should check for the string periodically especially after a menstrual period.

ADVERSE REACTIONS:

Side effects may occur in women using In).

A. It is rather common to experience a heavier menstrual flow and some cramping for the first few cycles after insertion.

B. Some women experience cramping and/or slight backaches for a few days following insertion.

These are not considered serious side effects.

Serious complications occur in a small percentage of women using the

A. Occasionally, the insertion of the IUD causes a flare-up of a previously existing pelvic infection (PID). Usually, IUD-related pelvic infection can be treated with medication. If PID goes untreated, there is a possibility of sterility.

B. Perforation of an IUD through the uterine wall is rare. It can occur during the insertion of the device. It is also possible for the IUD to be pushed through the uterine wall by contractions of the uterine muscles themselves.

WARNINGS:

Call your physician or family planning clinic immediately for any of the following:

A. Severe or prolonged bleeding.

B. Pelvic pain and cramping. This could mean an infection has developed.

C. Exposure to venereal disease (VD). Failure to contact your physician if venereal disease is suspected, could result in serious pelvic infection.

D. Disappearance of IUD strings. If you cannot feel the string (tail or thread) in the vagina, it is possible the I'm has been expelled or displaced. Use another method of birth control such as contraceptive foam, cream, or jelly and condoms every time you have intercourse until you are checked by your doctor.

E. Some women can become pregnant with the IUD in place. If you miss a period, or if you have a scanty flow, or if you suspect you are pregnant, see your doctor or family planning clinic immediately. Serious complications can arise if the pregnancy continues with the IUD still in the uterus. If the doctor confirms that you are pregnant, the IUD should be removed. Removal of the IUD early in the pregnancy decreases the likelihood of serious complications.

SUMMARY:

The IUD is an excellent contraceptive when properly inserted and routinely checked. From the standpoint of effectiveness, it is approximately 97-99% effective - a close second to birth control pills (oral contraceptives). It is easy to use and causes little if any discomfort to most users.

If you decide to use an IUD as your method of birth control, your doctor will be glad to answer your questions and supply you with additional information.
