What Is the Abortion Pill, Anyway? Let’s Break It Down.

You might’ve heard terms like medication abortion or medical abortion floating around. They’re all talking about the abortion pill. It’s actually two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol.

  • Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, which your body needs to sustain a pregnancy.
  • Misoprostol, taken later, causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus.

he process usually takes a few hours to a couple of days. Many patients say it feels similar to a heavy period, though everyone’s experience varies. Some prefer the privacy of handling it at home. Others appreciate coming back for additional support. Both paths are valid, and we’ll talk through your preferences every step of the way.

Why So Many People Travel for the Abortion Pill

Now, you might wonder: Why would someone go out of state for this?

Truth is, abortion laws vary wildly across the country. What’s legal in Maryland might be restricted, or outright banned, elsewhere. For many, Maryland offers freedom and privacy they simply can’t find back home.

  • Maryland law allows abortion up to viability, without mandatory waiting periods.
  • Our clinicians have decades of specialized experience.
  • We’re dedicated to patient-centered, respectful care, no matter where you’re from.

It’s not just the medical side, either. Some folks want emotional space or simply to avoid the stigma that can shadow abortion care in their hometowns. Sometimes, a short trip is the path to peace of mind.
