In-Clinic Abortion

Performed from approximately 5 weeks to approximately 17 weeks.

In-clinic abortion is a commonly performed procedure with a very low rate of complication. Most patients feel better quickly and are back to their normal activities the day after the procedure.

How do I know if a medication abortion or an in-clinic abortion is best for me?

All in-clinic abortions are performed by a licensed, experienced gynecologist. The procedure uses aspiration to empty the uterus and usually takes 5 to 10 minutes.

You will meet privately with a clinician who will explain the procedure, review your after-care instructions, and help you with your birth control choice. During the procedure, a clinician will be with you at all times. A nurse will monitor and discharge you from the recovery room.

Your Visit Will Include:

We offer two levels of anesthesia:

Local Anesthesia

Your cervix will be numb and you will receive pain medication. You are awake during the procedure and will feel strong cramping. You are able to drive yourself home.

General Anesthesia

ONLY AVAILABLE AT OUR ROCKVILLE AND CATONSVILLE LOCATIONS
The most popular anesthesia choice. IV medication is administered by the anesthesiologist/anesthetist and you are given just enough anesthesia so that you do not experience any pain for the few minutes it takes to perform the abortion. You will not feel anything during the procedure and will awaken in the recovery room with the nurses after the abortion is complete. In order to safely administer the general anesthesia, you may not have anything to eat, drink or smoke from midnight the night before and you need someone to drive you home.
